Unlocking the horrors of Grim Prairie Tales' vacuum vagina
I join writer Lindsay Hunter to discuss the strangest horror anthology
Hi, I hope you’ve been having a fun summer. Me? I’ve been dirtbaggin’ it up. It’s been rad. I finished a novel that I’ve been working on for a long time, and also a Planet of the Apes jigsaw puzzle—a little treat for myself for finishing said novel.
A few months ago, friend and novelist Lindsay Hunter (whose Hot Springs Drive was my favorite book of 2023) asked if I wanted to be a guest on her podcast to discuss the horror anthology movie, Grim Prairie Tales.
“I want to talk about the Vacuum Vagina from Grim Prairie Tales” she wrote.
Despite being a horror freak, I’d never seen Grim Prairie Tales, let alone heard of it. But vacuum vagina? Say no more.
The structure of the film follows Brad Dourif and James Earl Jones—two Wild West travelers who swap spooky stories over a campfire. Dourif is reliably great, but James Earl Jones absolutely kills it, chewing up scenery in the world’s best wig. And one of the stories he tells is about vacuum vagina.
The only copy we could find was this janky Youtube rip, but it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re into cinematic oddities. (Fast forward to 35:00 if you’re only interested in vacuum vagina).
Now go and listen to us talking about it on the podcast. I swear we’re really smart.
Small Press Nite
I’m also very excited for Small Press Nite this weekend. San Diego native Juliet Escoria is one of the most fearless writers I know, and she’ll likely read from her dark new story collection, You Are the Snake. Readers of AWKSD should also know poet Ana Carrete. See you at Book Catapult this Saturday, August 3rd, at 7 p.m.
