I've never said this before but I think this post was written for me. I'm familiar with Danzig but only in the background. I came up listening to Ministry and Nitzer Ebb, and then went the industrial/techno/rave route in the 90's. Missed what Danzig was up to after Mother. I'm a bit embarrassed to say I was excited to read this and saved it for a time I could go through and listen to each song. I knew next to nothing about Danzig's career before this and I really enjoyed the explainer. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you dug it. And no need for embarrassment—I feel like even the most avid Misfits fans kind of ignore Danzig's solo stuff (maybe because of his status of being a an internet punchline), but there's a lot of good Danzig stuff.
"Glenn Danzig formed The Misfits with brothers Doyle (guitar) and Jerry Only (bass)"
Nope. Danzig formed the Misfits initially with drummer Manny Martinez in '77. Jerry Only was then recruited on bass. Hence the original line-up featured Danzig on vocals and electric piano, Martinez on drums, and then Jerry on bass. Later that year Frank Licata joined on guitar, phasing out the piano. Martinez was replaced by Jim Catania. In '78, Rick Riley replaced Licata and Jim Catania quit. Joey Poole then joined as the drummer, and Bobby Steele joined as the new guitarist. So '78 saw the line up of Danzig, Jerry Only, Bobby Steele and Joey Poole. This lineup saw the band fully evolve into the horror elements that would be the band's image, and the adoption of the Crimson Ghost logo with the '79 Horror Business single. In 1980, Arthur Googy became the new drummer and later that year Steele was replaced by Doyle.
In fact, Doyle didn't even start learning to play guitar until 1980.
So no, Danzig most certainly did not form the Misfits in '77 with Jerry and Doyle.
“You know the joy that comes from witnessing an old cat get the zoomies again? That’s what it’s like listening to Black Laden Crown. "
Pure genius.
