Really well written if not entirely wrong conclusion. The opening to any sublime song makes me lunge for the radio dial and it’s all because of Bradley’s writing and singing and those ruin everything. Amazing rhythm section and great trombone too. But that one guy f’s up the whole thing.
Loved reading this, Ryan! As San Diego teen, you definitely captured how it felt to become aware of Sublime. Worth pointing out that while I agree how and why white boy reggae is disconnected from Reggae roots, Nowell’s dad did take him to Jamaica as a kid where he discovered Reggae and decided to learn how to play guitar. Kinda a cool detail that didn’t make it into an otherwise fantastically researched article.
That was lovely. Thank you both
Yes!
lol’d at “not true, rude.” And that poor dog. Good lord.

Thank you! And yes, I totally forgot about the Jamaica trip. I think they talked about that on the Behind the Music episode. Thanks for the reminder!
How do I get that info about lou dog out of my head
You don’t. You can’t. We all must bear witness to Lou Dog
Ryan i just walked by a window and saw a dog that vaguely resembled lou dog and I truly feel traumatized and will be billing you for therapy sessions
Tough but fair. Sending you a Venmo rn

While I wish I could wash my brain, I agree with your assessment. Sublime is, unfortunately, good.
